Leo’s Story

Hi, I’m Leo. I’ve been involved with people like Jayne and Anna from Ling Trust for many years, as a campaigning mum of two autistic young men. The housing services for autistic people with complex support needs are so poor. One of my sons lives far from home and asks to come back every single day — it breaks my heart.

To relax, I bake. I make different breads, homemade cakes, and meals because I believe looking after your health starts with good food. Every day, I shop and cook for my son, and although he lives separately, it’s one way I can give him home-cooked food and keep him connected to our love and care.

Even when people come out of hospital into the community, it can still feel institutional and lonely. We need more family-style support — where families and paid carers work together, share experiences, and make sure people stay rooted in their own communities.

Here I am heading to a retirement party at the Royal College of Psychiatry for the CEO of the Challenging Behaviour Foundation. As a busy mum, I don’t often get the chance to dress up — it was a lovely change!

Keeping fit helps me deal with the stress that comes with fighting for a better life for my family.

Here’s some of my homemade bread — a small way I try to show love and care every day.

And here are my stress-busting cats.

I’ve campaigned for years and even been on TV. I believe we urgently need to speak to Wes Streeting, the current minister. Since Norman Lamb stepped down as care minister, everything’s gone backwards. He understood us. Now, things are worse than ever.

It feels like the Post Office scandal — just in a different form. Our kids and families are being forgotten, and that needs to change.
